Too soon gone

I stood in the seeping rain,
eyes dripping twice over
and fixed on the hole in
the muddy sodden earth,
too small, too large, for us
mere mortals to bear
its final resting call.

Lowering down,
lowering down,
the tiny vessel,
wooden white,
is too soon gone,
with nothing left
but the dreaded rain
and the sodden handshakes met
with silent goodbyes and
steady grey departures
from life and death.
