Midnight

Midnight we met expectant under

a full moon light risen sky high

above the trees in the stillness

of divinity where only the gods sigh.

Here you stayed with me as night lover

quiet and tender, eye to eye, existing

in presence with presence and together

alone with the flickering witness of stars.

And we drank in the mist of evening

spread low across the moon-lit trees

with the sound of breath slow and even

the only disturbance in the universe.

Soft skin on skin we had beneath the

the blanket of cold darkness wrapped

tight in this deathly time of night when

half the world’s asleep, except Thou and I.
