Caught in this intricate
moment between
what was
as a certainty
and what might be
as an uncertainty,
there is no way to
slip back through
the stream of time
to recover what
is gone;
and in looking forward
there are
the many
uncertain possibilities
of futures
that branch like
trees into
the unfoldings
and arrays
of what might be.
Existing now
is all there is,
just now
and ever in
that territory
of living
between
reflections
about yesterdays
and ponderings
about tomorrows.
And in that
moving forward
with courage
into the openings
of the future,
with anxiety
and anticipation
always holding
our hands,
there are
the unknown unknowns
and the possibilities
beyond prediction,
and the present threat
of extinction.
