Star gazing

The ancients saw the heavenly spheres

but I see just the stars

held invisibly in space;

and I look with what I know,

as they looked for what they knew.

We share in time our wonder

and our looking,

our making of sense

and our thinking that there

is more in the fathomless

speckled ink of night.
