We are two friends
of convenience
who meet for coffee
and talk about all
that we have to talk
about in the language
of our profession.
But under the shield
of all that we say
there seems to be more
than just the purposes
that are overtly on display.
There are shifts and turns
and glances and sometimes
the appearance of deep
inner needs that surface
at surprising moments
of awkward clarity.
We are two friends for sure
who meet in public spaces
and talk about ideas and dreams
among the proper things
that should be part of our discourse.
And we will never meet
eye to eye, soul to soul,
for in that connected look,
too long held to be withdrawn,
the truth of what we are
and what we might be
would frighten us both away.
