What is the sum of my life,
when I do all the adding and
subtracting, the weighing and
the remembering; what will it be
that is left as the figure to
circle and say that this is it?
When I apply the formula for
happiness and see what brings
the joy and what amounts to ill,
will it be in the red or the black?
I have no answers to these questions,
for I am no accountant of the worth
of life, or a mathematician of the soul,
just a person caught in thought about
what was and what might have been.
