We are looking at
our feet walking,
watching each step,
and counting the toes
as they push along
the concrete paths,
the dusty lanes
and the soft and green
expanses that open out
into nature’s grand offering.
We so carefully watch
the progress of our feet
and so warmly praise ourselves
for how far we have come;
but in looking down and in
observing our limited world
for so damn long,
the great drop is not seen ahead,
not seen till the feet fall
and the toes do not
move ahead anymore.
