We want an Australia that keeps the door unbolted,
where a name, a scarf, a skin, a prayer, a silence,
a gender, a sexuality, an age, a dis/ability
is not a reason to be measured insignificant,
or passed over unnoticed or treated without dignity.
Let us argue without turning neighbour into enemy,
letting protest be the breath of our democracy,
and dissent be heard before it is feared.
A fair go is not a throwaway slogan but a practice,
grounded in our living: in rent and bread and safety,
in work with dignity, in what is earned in equality,
in tax paid, in hands outstretched, shoulders shared,
taking the load that you and we and all can bare.
We stand on Country with truth in our mouths,
and welcome the stranger as future kin,
holding conviction with care, not brutality.
