Autumn in Melbourne

I subtle feel the first days of Autumn,
this time of March that sits between
the blaze of sun, t-shirted and beached,
and the coming shortness of days,
jumpered and coated and withdrawn inside.

The offer is still the warmth of days,
but with the changing cool of night
that invites sweet slumber delicious,
and in memory, as the seasons pivot,
the expectation of winter chill to come.

Here now, sitting inside, looking out,
the sky is a light insistent grey of change,
and the sun has yet to show its lowering
face in the time between the bright sweaty
light and the dull show of season’s end.
