Silence

You warmly applaud silence,
like some salve for my ills,
as if being silent will still
the restlessness and stir
the return from disintegration.

Don’t you know that silence
is the dart that penetrates
within, and don’t you see
that in the stillness the voices
come to steal my peace away.

The noise, loud and constant,
keeps me from myself: the
person ravaged by razored times
that can never be contained and
go away, never, for the sharp
edge of silence opens me up
to the other self I used to be.
