On this fine blue day
the Kookaburra came
to our garden, with its
prominent beak and it’s
coat of white, black and
brown, perched secure
and serene and surveying
the scene with its keen
eyes watching me look
at it as an emblem of
best luck and an icon
of this great southern land
where this beautiful bird,
this kingfisher of the trees,
is a totem for many First
Peoples who revere it, and
now I am blessed that it
has come to visit me.
