Kindness

1. Others

I see you hidden there,
Thou who are present
and not invisible at all,
and you see my shaking
open hand reaching out
but never touching you,
and I, in this gentle
way unannounced,
lift you up and up and
up above the pain
to this possible day.

2. Myself

On this day I have found my
own treasure hidden inner,
once covered by doubt
and some disabling shame,
by thoughts that sabotage,
but it is glittering now
as I open the golden case to
the possible world of us,
for what is there as gold is
mine but not all mine to own.

3. Animals

This world is not all
mine or yours or ours,
not a cage to confine
or a space to ravage
for our pleasure or use,
for it is the sacred place where
species other than us roam,
and where I find the beauty
of this natural ancient way,
and I will not hold them down
but be a saviour of their cause
in this possible order that will live
beyond our wretched interval
and the footprints on this ground.

4. The earth

This moving mothership,
before us and after us,
our only ship in a cold sea,
suckles us on this fertile
crescent that circles in time
and space, and this, only this
is our true living, our first
and only garden, and so I will
bring a tenderness to this place,
my home, and cherish all that it
is as the incubator of my present
life, my future hopes, my possibility.
