God help us if stupidity
and bigotry rule the day,
and pave the dark way for
division and hatred and
the stripping of hard-fought
rights that allow people to
be free without the awful
oppression of those days
when only white men ruled
and the law served the select
few who could buy its grace.

Wake up and see the state
of this place and the ugly
white masks that cover the
faces of truth, and the lies
from the serpent that seem
so true because hearts have
lost sense and conviction
and get off on jingoism,
and are filled with fear about
what might be, fed by the
pompous view of influences
who have no evidence for all
the contrived things they say.

God might help us if he were
not chained to the distorted
views of those who sit in
churches and sprout with
conviction that this nonsense
is his will, and this nation
needs more religion to find
its soul among the dissention
and the poverty, injustice, racism
and insecurity that are the deadly
dis-ease infecting the nation.
