These are uncertain times,
as many care to say,
and such times bring people
back to certain voices,
and voices of certainty,
even if filled with lies
and promises as shallow
as a river in drought.
Perhaps we would rather
hear the lies than accept the
bubbling awkward truth that change
is the only certainty from day to day,
and our lives are always
teetering on the margin between
now and what we would like them to be.
Fables and feign conviction have
ever won out in the landscape of fear,
and we now see this playout
in parliaments, from pulpits, on screens
and the stage, and here the ‘truth’
become no more than
what we crave to believe,
as we seek convenience and a
place where uncertainty and fear
are dispelled in the comforting
embrace of crafted words.
