I see

When I look at myself
in mirror or on screen,
I see a young man with
his dreams looking back
and taunting me with
what might have been.

I see an older man with
wrinkles staring at my
face and asking questions
about all the years and
all that has passed and
all the living that is done.

This is fate.
This is not of gods or god.
I am a creature of an order,
stretching further than I can see.

This is me in front of mirror
or screen, and it will be as
it will be,
and I am what I am,
nothing more,
nothing less,
though I feel,
though I see,
though I protest
against nature herself.
