Against hate

The corrosive power of hate
is among us,
this wolf is in us,
and it’s a potential that
finds its ground wherever
difference is scorned,
and rights crucified.

There is no cure for hate,
for it is tied into the sinews
of our humanity as tribal creatures
prone to defend our familiar ground
and tear to pieces those
outside our gates.

But there are some remedies,
ancient and modern, that we can
apply to ourselves first, then others.

One potent remedy is to drink
the cup and stand proud
in quiet resistance and to say NO
to hate: to stare it down,
to question its base,
and to bring it into the
white light of conviction.

Despite trembling with fear,
I will stand.
Against the mob, I will find voice.
Into hate, I will inject the serum of care.
I will not be silent but speak with
the living vibrant caress of peace.
