In the face of nature

Sea, land, sky.
Out, out to the universe.
That is all of existence.
That is all we can know.
This is the extent of the senses.

Embedded.
Dependent.
Subject to nature’s
changing moods and whims .
Free and bound.
Breathing nature’s bounty
and wondering much,
for this is us.

Part of a community.
Each a community.
Living on this, this thin strip,
on the blue dot,
as it has been oft called.

In the face of nature
we stand as creatures
among creatures,
contemplating life and
death and
hazy tomorrows,
and remembering
that we are nothing
more and nothing less,
and nature cares naught
for our ambitions.
