Poetry contests

Dear reader,

I despise
poetry contests,
and will never enter
one while this ageing
mortal body
still has breath.

Why, you probably ask?

The answer is simple
and you may disagree.

Poetry is not thing to
be judged by someone
with a certain taste,
style , preference,
or prejudice.

It is to be shared and
savoured, and understood
by each person who
hears or reads on their
own terms.

A poems greatness is not
found in some external,
judgement, like it’s a fine wine,
but in its ability to
touch and transform.

It is never finished and it always moves.

I am with you,
John Keating.
