Confront the fear

What’s really lurking at
the bottom of your anxiety:
fear,
fear of change,
fear that things
will never be the same.

You seem to have a belief
that there is a
natural order,
that everything has
to be a certain way,
and what has
always given you comfort
is how it should be.

But change is as inevitable
as the sun and rain and
that we get old,
and we wither
on the vine and we die.

Change visits our bodies
every second of
the day, and
your comfortable stasis
will, like everything else,
pass away.

I see you clutching
desperately on to ways
and values that you
have always believed,
and now as these are
challenged you are afraid.

But don’t you see what these
are: they were always built
on privilege and dividing the
haves from the have-nots,
they were constructed on
prejudices that
run deep, even if you honestly
believe they are true.

This now is a different time,
a time of change in the ways
we see the world
and each other,
a time when we must question
those values that exclude.

So, confront that fear that lies
deep in your soul,
and open yourself to charge, for
in it there are no demons,
and the sky will not fall.

In it there is hope for everyone,
as the future comes and change
visits our bodies and our souls.
