Faces in the crowd

The crowd is a mass,
a streaming, flowing
globule of humanity
that seems the same
from a distance,
from the far gaze,
from the vantage
point that allows
easy commentary on
who they think we are.

But get in closer and
you will see the many faces,
the manifolds of humankind:
all shapes and colours,
wide and thin,
rounded and chiselled
tight and droopy,
with smiles, frowns,
and the sculptures
of feeling that make each
person the tender creation
of an artist who
understood their joy and pain.
