History is the lesson-giver
confirming where we are and
what we need to do to move
beyond the poverty of the past.

It teaches us about the thinking
that steered us towards packaging
people in little boxes of prejudice
and fear and binding them up with
injustices that seemed like the norm.

History’s sharp blade cuts deep
as awakening and as our souls bleed
we can find a way to see people,
who, once hidden from the common eye,
come out of history to confront face-to-face.
