Walking before dawn

We are walking just before dawn
out on a track in nature green,
and the shrill call of birds and
their flapping wings is the only
sound heard in this silent pocket
of relief before the day unfurls.

The clouds have closed out the
sky and so the moon is not our
friend and darkness cloaks the
distance as we walk towards an
end we cannot see, as our footfall
crunches the ground with each step.

Then back again towards home,
soaking in the utter silence and the
nothing of this treasure that exists
at our doorstep, and from the gentle
quietude our sprinkling thoughts arise
about the waiting day that lies unknown.
